Vavuniya & the inland north

Pilgrimage tanks, forest temples, and the gateway from the south — the inland north most travellers drive straight through.

Vavuniya is the first major town you reach when entering the Northern Province from the south — the de facto gateway, with its own quiet character beyond its role as a transit hub. The inland north around Vavuniya holds ancient irrigation tanks, forest temples, and a Buddhist and Catholic pilgrimage circuit that sees almost no international visitors despite its significance.

What to know

Before you go

Geography

Tank country — a landscape shaped by ancient irrigation reservoirs that still water the paddy. The Madhu forest, west of Vavuniya, is one of the few sizeable woodlands left; Giant's Tank, further north, sits within a designated wildlife sanctuary.

Culture

Mixed Tamil, Sinhala and Muslim communities — the most religiously layered part of the Province. Madhu Church draws Catholic pilgrims year-round, with the August feast bringing hundreds of thousands.
