Northern Pilgrimage
A four-night circuit of the peninsula's living temples, Hindu and Buddhist alike.
The journey
The Jaffna peninsula carries one of the densest concentrations of working temples in South Asia, and the Northern Province has been a meeting place of Hindu and Buddhist devotional life for two millennia. This journey moves carefully through that geography — Nagadeepa offshore, Nallur and Maviddapuram in the city, Naguleswaram and the springs at Keerimalai on the northern coast.

Arrival & first temple bells
Arrive at the villa in the early afternoon. After tea, a short walk through the surrounding lanes — past small wayside shrines and the call to prayer from a nearby mosque, the texture of the peninsula in miniature. Dinner is light and early, in keeping with the days that follow.
