Abi Nila Villa

Nila — the moon, in Tamil — sits on a quiet residential lane in the northern quarter of Jaffna town. Thick laterite walls, high ceilings, a central courtyard that draws a breeze even in April. The stone floors stay cool underfoot. Mornings begin on the verandah and the temple bells reach you, faintly, on the half hour.

The house is the work of three generations of one family. Abi grew up here, left for a long stretch in Colombo and London, and returned to find the lagoon still visible from the back wall and the frangipani still in bloom. The restoration kept the original tiles, the wooden louvred windows, and the old courtyard well; the pool, the outdoor showers and the wiring are quietly new.

For most visitors arriving in the North, this is the right first base. The fort is a short walk; Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is fifteen minutes by foot; the market opens before sunrise. The villa is small on purpose — three suites, a hosted kitchen, a single quiet pool.
