A small-group morning walk through the Jaffna Municipal Market and the surrounding short-eats shops, led by a local cook who has spent years preparing Tamil Jaffna food. The walk is not a tour of restaurants; it is a walk through the raw ingredients and the daily food culture of a community that has one of the most distinct regional cuisines in Sri Lanka.
You start at the vegetable section of the market at around 7:30 a.m. while the produce is freshest. The guide explains the seasonal palmyra calendar — the nungu jelly fruit, the fresh sap collected at dawn, the dried products — and introduces the vendors by name. From the market, the walk continues to a small tea shop on Hospital Road for a breakfast of idli, sambar, and coconut chutney, then to a short-eats bakery for fish buns and vadai.
The walk ends at a private kitchen where the cook prepares a brief cooking demonstration of Jaffna curry paste using the ingredients purchased at the market.
