We have travelled across Sri Lanka many times but Jaffna had always been a gap. Staying with Abiholiday filled that gap — and then some. The villa felt like a family home. The food was extraordinary: slow curries, coconut sambol, hoppers at breakfast. Abi arranged a flamingo boat trip at Vankalai that we talk about still. Not a moment of it felt like tourism.

I was travelling solo and slightly uncertain — Jaffna is not yet on the backpacker circuit. Abi was reassuring from the first message and had thought of everything before I arrived: a local SIM, a bicycle, an introductory walk through Nallur. The villa is quiet and generous. I stayed four nights and wished I had booked seven.

With two children aged eight and eleven, we were nervous about travelling to the north. We needn't have been. The villa is relaxed, genuinely child-friendly, and Abi's knowledge of the region meant every outing was perfectly calibrated. The island trip to Kayts with a packed lunch is a family memory we'll hold for years.

My parents emigrated from Jaffna in the 1980s. Returning as an adult, with my own family, was an intensely emotional experience — and Abiholiday handled that with real care and sensitivity. They connected us with a temple community my grandmother had mentioned, arranged a visit to a family we didn't know we could find, and gave us a Jaffna that goes far deeper than any guidebook.

I come to Sri Lanka every year for work and had always skipped the north. A colleague recommended Abiholiday and I blocked out five days. The villa is beautifully simple — good linen, a proper kitchen, a courtyard that's right for sitting in. Abi's Jaffna guide is the best I've seen; I followed it almost to the letter and had a perfect time.

We came for our anniversary and wanted something unhurried. Northern Sri Lanka delivered entirely. Abi met us at the train station at 6 am after the overnight from Colombo and had coffee waiting. The whole stay had that quality — thoughtful, unobtrusive, genuinely personal. The Mannar day trip in particular: the ancient baobab, the flamingos, a lunch of fresh crab by the water.

I research post-conflict development in South Asia and Jaffna is important to my work. But this trip was personal — my first time back in thirty years. Abiholiday understood the emotional weight of that without being asked. The villa felt like a sanctuary. And the food: I had forgotten what Jaffna crab curry tasted like. I won't forget again.

I had read about Jaffna in a magazine and was surprised to find so few places to stay that felt right. Abiholiday was exactly right — considered design, genuine hospitality, and a profound sense of place. The beach at Casuarina at low tide, the temple at dusk, the market at seven in the morning. This is the Sri Lanka that most visitors never see.
