The Jaffna Municipal Market occupies the block between Hospital Road and Stanley Road near the town centre. The official opening time is 6 a.m., but the serious activity starts earlier — by 7 a.m. the vegetable section is in full operation, and by 8 a.m. the fish, meat, and spice sections are at their most alive.

The market is organised into sections. The outdoor areas along the perimeter hold the vegetable and fruit stalls — local varieties of mango, palmyra fruit (the translucent jelly sold individually from metal drums), dried fish, fresh coconut, and a range of greens that do not have standard English names. The indoor sections hold the fish market and meat section.

What distinguishes the Jaffna market is the palmyra economy. Palmyra is the tree of the Northern Province and its products are everywhere: fresh sap (toddy) sold in bottles before it ferments, jaggery made from concentrated palmyra sap, and the young fruit that the Tamil word nungu covers.

Jaffna cheese — a firm, mild, locally made cheese produced primarily in the Jaffna district — is sold at a few stalls and worth purchasing. It is not widely exported and is rarely found outside the North.
