Casuarina Beach, Karainagar, Jaffna — shoreline at midday

Region — Northern Sri Lanka

Mullaitivu coast

The unvisited east — empty beach, fringing reef, and fishing villages that rarely see foreign visitors.

Mullaitivu is the least-visited stretch of coastline in Sri Lanka — a long arc running south from the Jaffna peninsula along the Bay of Bengal. The coast here is raw: wide empty sand, fringing reef, fishing villages where the day still begins at the water's edge. Accessibility has improved significantly over the past decade, but the area remains genuinely off the tourist path.

What to know

Before you go

Geography

The coast runs east-facing on the Bay of Bengal — the only Northern Province coastline that does. Inland it gives way quickly to dry jungle, cashew forest, and a string of brackish lagoons where migratory waterbirds gather.

Culture

Tamil fishing villages, slowly rebuilding after the conflict. Foreign visitors are still rare. A respectful, unobtrusive way of travelling here is essential.
