Frequently asked
Most things are covered below. If your question isn’t, send us a message and we’ll reply personally — usually the same day.
Booking & enquiries
How do I make a booking?
Send us a message via the contact form, email, or WhatsApp with your dates and party size. We reply personally within 24 hours, usually the same afternoon — there is no automated booking engine, every reservation is handled by Abi.
How does request-to-book work?
Each enquiry is read and answered individually. We confirm availability, sketch out a proposed stay, and send a personalised quote — only when you accept does the date go on hold. Nothing is charged until you confirm.
What does the rate include?
Villa rates include daily housekeeping, welcome provisions, a hosted local orientation, and our curated guide for the Northern Province. Meals and activities are priced separately so you can choose the experience you want.
What payment methods do you accept?
Bank transfer (international wire), Wise, and card payments via a secure link. The deposit and balance schedule is confirmed at booking — typically a deposit on confirmation and the balance ahead of arrival.
When is the deposit due?
A deposit secures your dates once you accept the quote. The exact amount and timing are confirmed in writing at booking and depend on how far ahead of arrival you reserve.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms are confirmed at booking and printed on your reservation note. We always recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation — and we are happy to suggest a policy if it helps.
Can I modify my dates after booking?
Date changes are accommodated where possible at no charge, subject to availability. Tell us as soon as you know — the earlier the better.
The villa
How many guests can the villa accommodate?
The villa sleeps up to six adults across three bedrooms, each with a private or semi-private bathroom. We don't host groups larger than six — the house is designed for families and close friends rather than larger parties.
Are children welcome at the villa?
Yes — children are genuinely welcomed, not merely tolerated. The garden, the shallow courtyard pool, and the slow rhythm of the day all suit families. Tell us your children's ages when you enquire and we'll suggest the right outings.
Do you have a cot, highchair, or family-room option?
Yes. A travel cot and highchair are available on request at no charge. Adjoining rooms can be arranged so a family of four or five sleeps together rather than scattered across the house.
What are check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 2 pm and check-out by 11 am. Early arrivals and late departures are usually accommodated; let us know when you book. Late arrivals are welcomed with a light supper kept warm in the kitchen.
Is there reliable Wi-Fi and air conditioning?
Yes to both. There is dedicated fibre with strong coverage throughout the property, and each bedroom has split-system air conditioning. Most guests use the AC at night and prefer ceiling fans by day.
Accessibility
Are there stairs in the villa?
The colonial villa has internal stairs to one of the upper bedrooms. Two bedrooms are on the ground floor with step-free access from the verandah. Mention any mobility needs when you enquire and we'll arrange the room layout accordingly.
Can older or less mobile guests be accommodated?
Yes. The ground-floor rooms are quiet, close to the kitchen and verandah, and avoid stairs entirely. Showers are level-access and we can place additional rails on request.
Food, dining & dietary
Can you arrange meals at the villa?
Yes. Our hosted kitchen serves a rotating daily menu of Tamil home cooking — the same food the family eats, not a simplified tourist version. Breakfast is included in the rate; lunch and dinner can be added as a meal plan or ordered day by day.
Do you cater for vegetarian or vegan guests?
Yes — our kitchen naturally produces a great deal of vegetarian and vegan Tamil food. Tell us when you book and we'll plan the week around it. Plant-forward eating is the rule rather than the exception in Jaffna kitchens.
How do you handle allergies and dietary requirements?
Send your dietary notes when you enquire and we'll confirm what we can do. The one limitation is that our kitchen is not nut-free; guests with severe nut allergies should speak with us before booking so we can plan safely.
Can non-guests dine at the villa?
The dining room is for guests staying with us. Private dinners for friends and family travelling together are arranged through our private-events page; we don't operate as a public restaurant.
What are the best places to eat in Jaffna?
We share a curated local guide on arrival — current favourites include Mangos for crab curry, Rio for the local kulfi, and the morning hopper stalls near the bus station. The best food in Jaffna is rarely indoors; we'll point you to the right street.
Family, drivers & pets
Is there accommodation for our driver?
Yes. When your stay includes a private driver, we provide complimentary driver accommodation in a separate quarters with its own bathroom. Meals for the driver are arranged at a modest pass-through cost.
Are pets welcome at the villa?
We don't currently host pets — the household includes elderly family members and a kitchen that serves all guests, and we'd rather be honest than make exceptions that create awkwardness. Service animals are considered case by case.
Can you arrange childcare or a babysitter?
A trusted local sitter can be arranged for an afternoon or evening with a day's notice. The sitter is a member of Abi's extended household, fluent in English, and used to small children and toddlers.
Travel & arrival
What is the best way to reach Jaffna?
The overnight train from Colombo Fort to Jaffna — eight hours through the night, arriving at dawn — is our recommendation. The Yal Devi (Queen of the North) Express is an experience in itself. Domestic flights from Bandaranaike or Ratmalana take about 40 minutes; the road takes most of a day.
Is Jaffna airport open to commercial flights?
Yes — Palaly (Jaffna International) handles domestic flights from Colombo and limited regional connections. Schedules change with the season, so we confirm current operators and fares when you enquire.
Should we hire a car or take the train?
For most guests we recommend the train up and a private driver during the stay. A self-drive hire car is rarely the right call — Sri Lankan roads reward local knowledge, and our drivers double as quiet guides for the day.
Do you arrange airport or station transfers?
Yes. We meet every guest in person — at the Jaffna airport strip, Jaffna train station, or the villa gate if you arrive by road. Driver costs are passed through at cost; the meet-and-greet is on us.
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Most nationalities need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arrival, applied for online via eta.gov.lk. India, Maldives and Seychelles passport-holders receive a free visa. Always check the current rules close to travel.
What is the best time of year to visit?
April through September brings clear skies and calm seas — the dry season for the North. The northeast monsoon (October–February) brings warm rain in short bursts; the shoulder seasons of October and March are the quietest and have a particular quality of light.
Activities, tours & weather
What tours and day trips do you arrange?
Private temple circuits, island ferry days to Delft and Nainativu, food walks through Jaffna market, Wilpattu safaris from the southern boundary, flamingo mornings in season, and slow lagoon afternoons. Every itinerary is built for your party — we don't run group departures.
What is included in the $50 day-tour rate?
The placeholder rate covers a guided day for two with a private vehicle, driver, the curated route, and entry where applicable. Boat tickets, meals out, and temple offerings are at cost on the day. Final pricing is shared with your stay quote.
How does the ferry to the islands work?
Public ferries to Delft, Nainativu and Karainagar run on schedules that shift with the sea state. We hold a flexible plan for ferry days — if the morning crossing is cancelled, we move the day to the next best option without fuss.
What happens on weather days?
When the weather closes a day's plan, we redraw it inside the villa or under cover — a cooking lesson, a market walk, an unhurried afternoon at the lagoon edge. Plans bend; the day still has shape.
Can we attend a Nallur festival day?
Yes — the Nallur Kandaswamy temple festival in August is one of the Northern Province's defining events. Some streets close to vehicles for processions, dress is modest, and timing is dictated by ritual; we'll guide you on what to wear and when to go.
Practicalities
What currency do you accept and is there an ATM nearby?
We invoice in USD or LKR and accept card or transfer for the stay. There are several ATMs in central Jaffna for daily spending; small Tamil markets prefer cash in small notes.
Will my mobile phone work in Jaffna?
Yes — Dialog and Mobitel both have strong coverage across the peninsula. A local SIM with generous data is inexpensive and easily picked up at the airport in Colombo or in Jaffna town on day one.
What should I wear for temples and the household?
For temples — shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the threshold, no leather inside the inner shrines. Around the villa it is informal; light cotton in the warm months and a wrap for cooler verandah evenings.
